YOGA FOR WELLNESS GROUP

My philosophy is that yoga is about self-care. It starts with our breath, which is one of the few internal bodily functions of such importance that we can control this ability with practice can help manage stress levels and calm/regulate the nervous system.

Yoga brings one’s focus away from busy thoughts or negative self-talk toward one’s own power for: awareness, self-control, strength building and feeling relief (emotional and physical).

Satisfaction of sensation is the goal of poses, never a strain to the point of discomfort/pain. Competitiveness has no place unless you are challenging yourself based on previous practice. Even with that, our body’s abilities can vary day to day. It is important to remember that everyone is working in their own way (strengths and limitations) on their mat. Modifications will be offered with encouragement and verbal assistance when needed.

This monthly class will include: breath-work, meditation, setting intentions, a flow of postures (vinyasa/yang) at a slow to moderate pace, followed by restorative and yin postures which are held for longer periods of time. The latter poses are supported by props (blocks, bolster, folded blanket etc.).

Yin and restorative poses for the most-part allow gravity to do the work as you release and relax into the pose. All of this is leading up to our final savasana pose of rest. This pose typically ends every class and its’ purpose is to allow the body to absorb and benefit from your practice. A return to intention, reflection on earlier meditation, along with the use of essential oil may accompany the closing ritual.

*What’s needed is: comfy clothing that you can move in, water, a yoga mat, and a willingness to try (if you are new to yoga). If available you may also bring a blanket, yoga blocks, and a bolster for your own personal use.
